Suspicious Minds, 2009

Suspicious Minds is a series of cropped press images from different print magazines and newspapers that I found and collected at the beginning of this century. The original images were showing leading male politicians in the center. Through my cut-out, I shift the focus of attention from the main subject of the picture to the figure in the background.
These well-dressed poker-faced men stand discreetly in the spotlight of public events watching over others, yet being watched themselves by the cameras recording the event.
I think all these faces from different political contexts have something in common. They look alike in their efforts to find the enemy of the system and protect power.
And something else is striking:
power is primarily male.
